When a patient asks me when she will see a difference with facial radiofrequency, my honest answer is: later than you probably expect, but in a way that will be worth it. Radiofrequency results are gradual by design — and that gradualness is exactly what makes them natural and impossible to detect as “work done.”
In short: the first perceptible changes appear between week 2 and week 4 of the protocol. The most significant results consolidate between 3 and 6 months post-treatment. This timeline cannot be accelerated because it depends on biological processes — primarily collagen synthesis — that have their own rhythms.
Why facial radiofrequency results are gradual
Facial radiofrequency generates controlled heat in the deep layers of the skin (dermis and subdermal tissue). This heat produces two effects that explain the results:
Immediate effect (contraction of existing collagen): Heat above 40°C causes existing collagen fibers to contract slightly. This generates a small amount of immediate firmness that some patients notice right after the session or in the following days.
Delayed effect (neocollagenesis): Heat also activates fibroblasts — the cells responsible for producing new collagen. This neocollagenesis process takes weeks or months to produce mature, functional collagen. It is responsible for the bulk of long-term results.
The proportion of each effect depends on the temperature reached and exposure time:
- At lower temperatures (38–40°C) tissue relaxation predominates
- At higher temperatures (42–44°C in the target tissue) neocollagenesis is maximized
The real timeline: week by week
During the session (day 0)

The treatment produces a progressive sensation of heat. Most of my patients describe it as “deep heat” or “like hot stones.” Depending on the device and treated area, there may be some discomfort at specific moments.
At the end of the session: the skin may appear slightly reddened and feel slightly warmer. This is temporary (lasts a few hours) and is a sign that the tissue received the correct stimulus.
Week 1–2 post-first session
Some patients notice the skin feeling slightly firmer to the touch. This is the effect of immediate collagen contraction. It is not a dramatic visual change — more a tactile perception of greater “structure.”
The skin may be somewhat more sensitive or have slight residual redness for the first 24 hours. I recommend strict sun protection from the first session.
Week 2–4 (during the 4–6 session protocol)
With the complete protocol underway, the cumulative stimulation begins to show more perceptible results:
- Facial contour: may appear more defined
- Neck: appears firmer with less laxity
- Skin in general: may look more “rested” with better texture
These changes are subtle but real. The follow-up photography we do at the clinic is useful at this stage because one’s own eye sometimes does not perceive changes that are evident in photographic comparison.
Month 1–2 post-protocol: change becomes visible
This is the period when fibroblasts are in full activity producing new collagen. The process does not stop when treatment ends — on the contrary, it continues to accelerate.
Changes observed in this phase:
- Noticeably improved firmness: tissues that previously gave way to the touch now have more resistance
- Facial oval improvement: contour becomes more defined
- Reduction of superficial folds: fine lines respond well in this period
- Better texture and luminosity: cell renewal associated with fibroblast stimulation improves overall skin quality
Month 3–6: maximum results
This is the peak of neocollagenesis. The collagen produced in previous weeks has matured and organized into functional structures. Results of firmness, tone, and facial oval redefinition are maximum in this period.
Based on my clinical experience, results are most visible and durable in patients who:
- Use SPF 50 sun protection every day
- Consume sufficient protein in their diet (collagen is a protein)
- Do not smoke (tobacco degrades collagen)
- Complement with medical skincare treatments (vitamin C, retinol)
Factors that accelerate results
Correct session temperature: The efficacy of radiofrequency depends on reaching the therapeutic temperature in the target tissue. At our clinic we use infrared thermometers to monitor that surface temperature reaches the correct ranges — this is not standard in all centers.
Session frequency: For collagen, more frequent is better up to a point. Sessions every 7–14 days in the initial protocol maximize cumulative stimulus.
Nutrition: A diet rich in amino acids (protein sources), vitamin C (essential cofactor for collagen synthesis), and zinc (activator of collagen enzymes) accelerates neocollagenesis.
Quality sleep: During deep sleep, repair and protein synthesis processes — including collagen — are activated.
Avoiding the sun: UV radiation actively degrades collagen. During a radiofrequency protocol, sun protection is essential, not optional.
Realistic vs. exaggerated results
It is important to calibrate expectations. Facial radiofrequency can achieve:

Realistic and documented results:
- Visible improvement in facial and neck firmness: YES
- Reduction of superficial fine lines: YES
- Improvement in skin quality and luminosity: YES
- Facial oval definition: YES, in mild-to-moderate laxity cases
What radiofrequency CANNOT achieve:
- Surgical lifting in cases of severe laxity
- Recovery of lost volume (that requires fillers)
- Elimination of deep expression wrinkles (that requires Botox)
- Immediate and dramatic results
Result duration and maintenance
A complete protocol of 4–6 sessions produces results lasting between 12 and 18 months in most patients. Variability depends on:
- Age and skin quality
- Sun exposure and lifestyle habits
- Whether or not maintenance sessions are done
My standard maintenance recommendation is:
- 1–2 booster sessions per year for patients under 50 with good skin maintenance
- 2–4 sessions distributed throughout the year for patients over 50 or with factors that accelerate aging

Frequently asked questions
The first visible firmness and tone results appear around 2–4 weeks after starting the protocol. The most marked results are visible between 3 and 6 months post-treatment, when neocollagenesis (new collagen production) is at its peak. Improvement can continue even up to 6–9 months in patients with a good response.
Results can last between 12 and 18 months with a complete 4–6 session protocol. Duration varies according to age, skin quality, sun exposure, and lifestyle habits. Maintenance sessions (1–2 per year) significantly prolong the effect. A protein and collagen-rich diet and consistent sun protection also help.
Yes, completely normal. The first 1–2 sessions produce internal heat in the dermal tissue that stimulates collagen, but visible changes take weeks to appear because new collagen production is a gradual biological process. Feeling the skin firmer to the touch from the first sessions is the first sign the treatment is working.
